European Football in Black and White: Tackling Racism in Football $38.48 European Football is Black and White offers an engaging interpretation of a disturbing phenomenon in Europe's favorite sport: football violence fueled by racism. While many fans across Europe have used football to further destructive, ethnocentric agendas, there are also Europe-wide initiatives in the football stadium to combat the almost endemic problem. Christos Kassimeris analyses political ideologies that have influenced football supporters, drawing attention to the increasing politicization of football and the footballization of politics. He also considers the contributions of nationalism, social class, and media coverage before assessing attempts by various groups, from the Football Against Racism in Europe (FARE) network to the European Union itself, to rectify the problem. Ultimately, football needs to be dissociated from both racism and politics for the sport to flourish. Unlike more traditional attempts to explain the football violence and racism, this book seeks to establish a Europe-wide as well as national explanatory framework for this racism from a political perspective. This study will draw the interest not only of scholars across the Humanities and Social Sciences, but also of ordinary football supporters. |

A Fan's Guide: European Football Grounds $26.48 With World Cup eliminators, the Champions League, UEFA Cup and, even, the much-derided Intertoto Cup, more teams now play in Europe than ever before and therefore more fans travel abroad regularly to see their teams in action. However, the available literature available to fans traveling from Britain to see games in Europe is very limited. Published to coincide with the Euro 2008 competition in Austria and Switzerland, this guide includes all the stadia scheduled for use in that competition, along with all the other major grounds likely to be encountered by traveling fans heading to European competition matches overseas. Each entry provides the reader with full information about the featured ground, capacity, facilities, how to obtain tickets, how to get there, nearest airport and local bars. The book also includes location maps and a representative selection of photographs. Compiled by Stuart Fuller, who has visited every single ground featured in the book, he brings his own personal knowledge of the grounds featured and facilities available. With more and more fans regularly traveling abroad either to support their local team in a UEFA competition or to support their national team in internationals, this is a comprehensive guide to the many football stadia likely to be encountered by fans when traveling abroad. |

Modern Football is Rubbish $5.83 Nick Davidson and Shaun Hunt are going through a midlife crisis as far as football is concerned. Now theyve reached early middle-age they are wondering what has happened to the beautiful game. Where have all the muddy pitches gone?. They wallow in nostalgia for 3pm Saturday kick-offs and cup upsets and they rant against inflated egos, spiralling salaries and satellite TV. And they wonder about men in tights and gloves. |

European Fields: The Landscape of Lower League Football $69.98 At the beginning of the 1995 soccer season, Hans van der Meer set out to take photographs of the game that dodged the clich d traditions of modern sports photography. In an attempt to record the sport in its original form--a field, two goals and 22 players--he sought matches at the bottom end of the amateur leagues. He avoided tight telescopic details and the hyperbole of action photography, pulled back from the central subject of the pitch, and set the playing field and its unfolding action in the context of local elements. Over the last 10 years, Van der Meer has continued this project across the playing fields of Europe, traveling to every country with a significant history of the game. The Netherlands yielded 1998's "Dutch Fields, " and the odyssey that brings forth "European Fields" has since taken him from Bihariain, Romania to Bjarka, Sweden, from Torp, Norway to Alcs*ars, Hungary, from Bartkowo, Poland to Beire, Portugal, and to urban and suburban Greece, Finland, England, France, Germany, Scotland, Switzerland, Holland, Slovakia, Denmark, Ireland, Wales, Belgium, Spain and Italy. Van der Meer's understated observations of the poetry and absurdity of human behavior on the field use soccer to consider--and provoke a laugh at--the human condition. |
